What an industrial degreaser actually does

Water-based / alkaline

Solvent / d-limonene
Citrus-derived d-limonene and modified alcohols dissolve what water can't. Faster but more expensive per use and require ventilation. Prefer over chlorinated solvents (TCE, perc) for any indoor application.

- Avoid on:
- Rubber gaskets, painted surfaces, food-contact areas
Neutral pH / low-tox
Formulated to stay in the 6–8 pH range and skip aggressive surfactants. Slower on hard grease but safer around people, food, and pH-sensitive surfaces. Often EPA Safer Choice-listed.

- Food service, healthcare, schools, occupied spaces
- Avoid on:
- Heavy petroleum contamination

- Readily biodegradable. Look for OECD 301 test data. This matters most when rinse water discharges to a sewer, storm drain, wash bay, or oil-water separator.

A five-step selection checklist
- Identify the soil. Petroleum, biological grease, food fats, carbon, or protein? The soil determines the formulation family more than any label claim.
- Map the rinse path. Municipal sewer, oil-water separator, storm drain, or containment? Storm-drain discharges essentially require biodegradable, low-tox products.
- Check the substrate. Painted, aluminum, galvanized, food-contact, polished stainless — pH and inhibitor package matter more here than raw cleaning power.
